COLUMBUS — Ohio State brought 16 starters back from last season’s team and, for the most part, already knew who would play and where this offseason. But now, less than a week away from the season opener, the Buckeyes still have a few unsettled position battles.

Here are my bets to start when Ohio State takes the field Aug. 31 against Indiana.

Right guard

Branden Bowen. It felt as if every scholarship lineman who was not already starting was in the mix for this job at one point, but from the sounds of it, Bowen has been one of the team’s most improved players. Because OSU goes directly into a Big Ten road game, the Buckeyes’ coaches have to go with the player with whom they feel most comfortable. As of now, I think that’s Bowen.

Binjimen Victor. Starting doesn’t mean all that much at receiver, where the Buckeyes will be rotating heavily, but I like Victor to replace the spot formerly held by Noah Brown. Austin Mack will play, too, though Victor’s 6-foot-4 frame makes him a valuable player on throwing downs and inside the red zone.

Strong safety

Erick Smith. The senior’s battle with Jordan Fuller has been close for the duration of training camp. Both players likely will see snaps early in the season, though I think Smith’s experience — he has played in 33 games in his career — gives him the nod in a week one road game.

Punt returner

Ohio State vs IndianaBoth. Demario McCall said last week that the Buckeyes were practicing with both he and K.J. Hill on the field at the same time. Urban Meyer noted this week how difficult it is to block a punt in today’s game, and Ohio State’s answer could be to add another returner. When the Hoosiers punt for the first time, chances are good both players take the field.
